AT&T U-verse Virtual Remote

Virutal Remote for Tablet App Design (iOS + Android)

Project Scope

The U-verse app allows you to control your cable box with a native mobile app (tablet or phone).

The scope was to create a visual design that mirrors the functionalities and carries the tactile feel from AT&T’s physical remote, making the transition for new users seamless.

My Contribution

I was brought into the project to provide a new visual design perspective and UX guidance.

As a lead UX designer, I created a scalable solution for various screens sizes (tablets and smartphones). I also delivered a library of assets to be used by the implementation team, and created and maintained a reference document for the QA teams.

I worked closely with leadership, branding, product managers, and development teams, early in the process. Delivered a mini toolkit (a list of UI components) for the dev team to accurately implement the design, allowing the team to quickly learn what was possible. I also shifted design decisions based on reviews during sprint demos and results from ad-hoc and task-based usability testing methods, which were conducted in collaboration with our UX research lead.

Design Rationale

The dark background of the application called for a higher contrast module, ensuring user focus when the remote was in open state, aligning with other floating modules.

Based on the wireframes and a concept for a physical remote of an upcoming release, I was able to quickly create iterative models of the virtual remote.

Right from the beginning, we assessed the current state of the design, kept what worked and removed what didn’t. Using discovery sessions for virtual remotes along with accessibility research teams, I created a virtual remote moodboard capturing our preferences, which facilitated the visualization process for leadership and were showcased to a small sample of our audience.

This process helped influence the general visual design direction and informed us of what to avoid.
